Sofie – The Collection Management System

The software Sofie is Sweden’s most used system for managing collections at museums, local history societies and archives.

Sofie is owned and developed by Västerbottens Museum since 1991 and has been sold to customers around the country since the mid-1990s. Today the software is running at over 250 customers at various cultural heritage institutions. The software can manage collections of objects, photographic images, relics and archives.

The success story of Sofie is largely due to the fact that the development has been done in close cooperation with the users. Sofie is known for simple installation, easy administration and high usability. Even users with limited computer-experience is able to install and use Sofie successfully.

Upcoming version – Sofie 8

At the moment we are in a process of making a completely new web-based version, Sofie 8. With this new version,  Sofie users will be able to present all or parts of their collections on the Web. It also means that you as a Sofie user only need a web browser (eg. Internet Explorer or Apple Safari) when working with Sofie and you can do it wherever you are, as long as you have an Internet connection.

For the public the new Sofie opens up possibilities to view the material in a completely different way than before. With Sofie 8 we can create an interactive database with participation and dialogue, and provide opportunities for the public to interact and to be co-creators. For example, the public will be able to add information to an object or archive material, share their knowledge and memories or even add entirely new items into your database, if they want to!

Only those who have permission can change and add data. Each database owner also determines completely over what should be made publicly available.

Sofie as a Service

You don’t need to install Sofie – we do it for you and you only have to use it as a service! Your instance will be hosted with us and you will be able to access it from any Internet device you would like: smart phone, tablet or your ordinary computer. No matter how big customer you are, we adopt the same philosophy:
your data is your property and we will not claim any rights from you.

The new version is going to be launched in 2014 and will then be maintained and improved to continue to meet your future demands!
